Until there is a refuelling infrastructure in place, any hydrogen-powered ride still rates as wishful thinking. That’s a pity, because the GV80 has the visual and driving appeal to be a popular ride.RELATED COMMENTSSHARE YOUR THOUGHTS ‹ Previous Next › RELATED TAGSGenesisHyundaiNew YorkNew York Auto ShowNewsCanadaHyundai EntourageHyundai Motor CompanyHyundai Tucson We encourage all readers to share their views on our articles using Facebook commenting Visit our FAQ page for more information. What is it? The Genesis GV80 Concept is Hyundai’s idea of what future generations will be driving. Being fuel-cell based, it is a true zero-emission drive. The styling is strong, featuring the signature Genesis grille, but it had a touch that separated it from just about every other ride at the NY International Auto Show — part of the wheel design is picked up in the B- and C-pillars, making rims look more like a part of the car than the things it rolls on. Inside, it is elegant in a minimalistic way; the horizontal dash and tall centre console feature very few conventional controls. The majority of functions are found in the 22-inch curved OLED display, which features two distinct zones for the driver and passenger. Why does it matter? Moving forward, the shift away from fossil fuel is going to become ever more important, so basing the powertrain on something where water is the only byproduct of “combustion” achieves that goal. Other than saying it will also be a plug-in, Hyundai was very thin on details. When will Canada get it? Right now the GV80 is purely conceptual, but that’s not to say it is destined to remain that way; Hyundai sold a fuel cell–powered vehicle in Canada in the form of the previous-generation Tucson.
